IMK represents Plaintiffs in Historic Human Rights Victory.

IMK is extremely proud to have represented the plaintiffs pro bono in Centre for Gender Advocacy et al. v. Attorney General of Quebec.  In this historic decision regarding the rights of trans, intersex and non-binary people, the Superior Court recognized that:

  1. non-citizens have a right to change their name and sex designation;
  2. people who do not identify as either male or female have a right to a non-binary designation;
  3. trans parents have a right to change their name and designation on their children’s birth certificates and non-binary parents have a right to identify as “parent” as opposed to “mother” or “father”;
  4. trans youth age 14 and over cannot be required to produce an attestation from a health professional in order to change their sex designation.

The judgment is the culmination of decades of community advocacy and the courage of all the plaintiffs and witnesses who came before the Court.
